Common contract sizes are preset (forex 100,000, gold 100 oz, indices and crypto 1, oil 100). Brokers differ, especially for indices, oil and crypto. Check the contract size once in your platform and enter it under “Advanced”. Spread and commission count towards the risk.

How to calculate your gold lot size

Enter your balance and account currency.
Choose your risk, e.g. 0.5 % or 1 % of the account.
Enter the stop-loss distance in USD (e.g. 5.00 if the stop is 5 USD below entry) or entry and stop as prices.
Read the lot size and enter it in MetaTrader.

Formula for gold (XAUUSD)

Lot size = amount at risk ÷ (stop distance in USD × 100)

Example: 100,000 USD account, 1 % risk = 1,000 USD. Stop 5 USD below entry: 1,000 ÷ (5 × 100) = 2.00 lots. A 1 USD move in gold is 100 USD per lot.
