Lot size calculator: the right position size in seconds
Enter your balance, risk and stop loss – the calculator shows the right lot size, the amount at risk and the risk-reward ratio. For forex pairs, gold, indices and crypto.
Advanced
Enter the stop loss to see the lot size.
Common contract sizes are preset (forex 100,000, gold 100 oz, indices and crypto 1, oil 100). Brokers differ, especially for indices, oil and crypto. Check the contract size once in your platform and enter it under “Advanced”. Spread and commission count towards the risk.
Want to size right on the chart? The lot calculator is also available as a plugin for MetaTrader 5. The plugin is part of Pro.
How to use the lot size calculator
- Enter your account currency and balance.
- Choose your risk: a percent of the account or a fixed amount.
- Pick the instrument and enter the stop loss in pips or points, or as a price.
- Read the lot size. Optional: add a target to see the risk-reward ratio.
The formula behind the lot size
Lot size = amount at risk ÷ (stop loss in pips × pip value per lot)
Example: 100,000 USD account, 1% risk = 1,000 USD. Stop loss 20 pips on EURUSD (pip value 10 USD per lot): 1,000 ÷ (20 × 10) = 5.00 lots.
FAQ
- How much should I risk per trade?
- Many traders, especially at prop firms, risk 0.25 to 1% per trade. That keeps even a losing streak well away from the daily and overall loss limits.
- What is the pip value?
- The pip value is what one pip of price movement is worth on 1 lot. For pairs quoted in USD (e.g. EURUSD) it is 10 USD. For other pairs the calculator converts with the current daily rate.
- Does it work for gold and indices?
- Yes. For gold (XAUUSD), indices such as US30 or NAS100, oil and crypto the calculator uses the usual contract size. If your broker differs, adjust it under “Advanced”.
- Are my inputs saved?
- No. Everything stays in your browser and is gone after a reload. To keep your settings and calculate right inside MetaTrader, use CRYPDEKS Pro.
